Summer Reading List

Please choose THREE (3) books from the following list to read over the summer.  Be prepared to write an informative, in-class essay over each one during the week of August 24-28, 2009.  These essays, which count as a major grade for the first nine-week grading period, will be written from your memory of what you have read - not from notes or by using the books themselves during the essay-writing process.  All titles are readily available from the public library, from local bookstores, and internet bookstores.

Christie, Agatha.  And Then There Were None
Crichton, Michael.
Congo*
DuMaurier, Daphne.  Rebecca
Hersey, John.
Hiroshima
Kipling, Rudyard.  Jungle Books
Pfeffer, Susan.
Life As We Knew It**
Riordan, Rick.
Lightning Thief
Stowe, Harriet Beecher.  Uncle Tom's Cabin*
Twain, Mark.  Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Walker, Margaret,
Jubilee*

* Books recommended for incoming 8th graders
** Vol State Book Nominees

Note:  film versions of these books do not substitute for the reading of the books themselves.  We strongly recommend that students do NOT attempt to view films in place of completing summer reading.  Any questions pertaining to this assignment may be addressed to alison.johnson@mnps.org
